A BRIMBANK resident with a passion for animals is trying to start a pet neighbourhood watch program and is seeking the assistance of fellow animal lovers.

Liliana Iuri wants Brimbank residents to help her look out for wandering animals in the municipality, which she believes is a big problem.

Although the development of a community project is a requirement of the communication and leadership course she is completing, Liliana said she had always had a love for animals.

"It has been my experience throughout my life that somehow lost or wounded animals tend to find their way to my balcony, garden or driveway," she said.

"I became quite distressed and concerned about hygiene, wild life, and implications for the well being of our own pets and also the environment, and decided to take action."

But Ms Iuri said, while she wanted to help keep wandering animals off the streets, she needed help from other people in the area.

"Reuniting pets with their owners and saving animals' lives take time, energy and effort and I cannot do all this by myself," she said.

"It requires cohesive action, integrity and courage.

"We need a group as large as possible to work as a team, to empower and inspire one another, and feel proud of who we are as residents in Brimbank "

Information sessions will begin in May for interested people, where ideas will be pooled on how to coordinate the pet neighbourhood watch group.
